As we have discussed in other articles, the MINI R56 four cylinder Prince engine has timing chain issues. More specifically, it has a timing chain tensioner issue that if left unchecked can cause catastrophic damage to your engine (please read our repair article MINI R56 Timing Chain Replacement for a more in-depth discussion on this topic).

I agree with the variable of how you use the bike and care for the chain, but I have found that in general the stock 525 chain will last about 20k miles if cared for. 520 replacement chains will usually last about 10k miles. Adjust those guideline numbers according to your own use and maintenance.
BMW E87 Timing Chain. Hey Guys new here! So I just recently purchased a used 2005/12 BMW E87 116i which apperantly needs to get its timing chain replaced. The guy who I bought it from is a machanic himself and he gave me an aftermarket timing chain set (Febi Bilstein). I took the car to a none offical bmw auto service where they told me that
In most cases, a timing belt kit will consist of the belt itself, 2-3 idler pulleys, and a tensioner. When the job is done, all these components will be changed out. In most cases, a timing belt kit will run between $100 -350. Labor on most timing belts is between 3-5 hours, putting your total cost between $400 -1,000.
The timing chain tensioner is expected to last between 80,000 and 120,000 miles. However, there is no recommended time frame to change the tensioner. The device is expected to run long and should be checked regularly.

2003 530i/5. The stock chain guides in a 1999-2003 540i last anywhere between 150k-200k miles, depending on maintenance. It's uncommon but not unheard of for a 1999+ 540i to go past 200k miles, as ViolinARC will repeatedly tell everyone. The earlier 1997-1998 540i had the M62 non-Vanos motor where the guides generally last around 200k-250k miles.

If it breaks or jumps while driving, the pistons will be damaged from contact with the valves. The valves themselves will bend and potentially ruin the

From what I can tell, (probably like lexus) a well taken care of bmw will last a very long time. As long as a car is not a lemon, the life of a BMW is most likely determined by how well you take care of it. If you treat it well, expect 250000 miles. 7 posts · Joined 2019. #1 · Sep 15, 2019. I recently purchased a 2005 GTO with 191k miles. Do I need to change the timing chain at 200k or is it designed to last longer. The owner changed the water pump but didn't change the timing chain while they were in there. I tried looking at forums and they said it went for the life of the motor or Mikola200 said: as E46's generation gets older we might see a few failures. I believe it is supposed to be checked and tightened once in a blue moon, smth like 150k miles or so. BMW uses spring loaded and/or hydraulic tensioners in just about everything with a timing chain. There is no adjustment possible.
A timing chain can last for more than 200,000 miles with proper care. You may never even need a timing chain replacement, but you should book a check when your car reaches 125,000 miles . Be sure to invest in regular oil changes to keep it well-lubricated.
